Chaka (Warner Bros. 1978)

     Il disco d'esordio di Chaka Khan viene inciso sotto la produzione di Arif Mardin, noto per il suo ottimo lavoro fatto con l'Average White Band. Alcuni membri dell'AWB partecipano anche all'album, insieme ad una nutrita schiera di musicisti californiani provenienti dalla soul-fusion. Malgrado queste sostanziose premesse il risultato non é eccezionale ed alterna buoni episodi a momenti meno interessanti. Notevoli i due pezzi scritti da Larry John McNally, "Sleep on it" e "A woman in a man's world", e l'iniziale "I'm every woman" di Ashford & Simpson che diventerà un successo nella futura versione di Whitney Houston. Bella anche la cover di "Roll me trough the rushes" scritta da David Lasley e contenuta originariamente nel primo album dei Rosie. Tra i brani da citare possiamo inserire anche il piacevole duetto con George Benson di "We got the love" mentre tutte le altre canzoni lasciano abbastanza a desiderare.
