An Eye for an Eye (Climax 1981)

     Dopo aver pubblicato nel 1979 uno stupendo lavoro di west coast pop come "Blame It on the Night", Robert Byrne si unisce al pluristrumentista Brandon Barnes per l'incisione per il solo mercato giapponese di un album a nome di Byrne and Barnes. Il disco é straordinario come il precedente, ricco di ottime composizioni e della splendida voce dell'artista mentre Brandon Barnes si limita ai controcanti ed alla parte strumentale. Il sound é sofisticatissimo, nella tradizione del miglior pop californiano, con eccellenti brani che si muovono tra soffici ballate e raffinati medi-tempo dalle influenze soul jazz, sul genere degli ultimi Steely Dan. Da notare che sono presenti due composizioni di Byrne gią cantate l'anno precedente da altri artisti, precisamente "Be my baby", contenuta in "Borrowed Time" (1980) di Jonny Rivers, e "Right through the heart", gią interpretata da Michael Johnson in "You Can Call Me Blue" (1980). Da segnalare la recente ristampa in CD Japan con una copertina diversa e due brani inediti, la bella "Who's that look in your eye" e la meno riuscita "That's the way she goes", ma con una deludente qualitą sonora, decisamente inferiore al vecchio e glorioso vinile.
